Artificial Islands to Resolve Housing Crisis

Artificial Islands to Resolve Housing Crisis

Hong Kong is a beautiful Region of hundreds of islands. Hong Kong’s geography is also interesting as it consists of more than 250 islands at a variable distance. These islands are appearing regularly so there will be more in the future.

Hong Kong is thinking about structuring completely new islands (artificial or manmade) to solve housing issues. City authorities are pitching an arrangement they call "Lantau Tomorrow Vision." That plan would assemble a complex of artificial 2,500 acres island. The undertaking may proceed with an extra 1,700 acres of land recovery around another island known as Hei Ling Chau.

This program is named after Lantau, which is the biggest island in Hong Kong, and the island which will have newer islands all around. This is an amazing project and it is a great example of modern civil work.

No American city even starts to compare to housing and lodging issues in Hong Kong. The region has the world's most costly property sector, around 40 % higher than Singapore which has the second most expensive housing market in the world, as indicated by The Economist. Housing on the newly developed manmade islands would have the option to oblige 1.1 million individuals.

However, this project is not welcomed by everyone in Hong Kong. There are so many critics of this project. According to the environmentalists, creating new islands in the Hong Kong territory would affect the water level, water passing in the ocean, and the movement of water. First of all, the water level is going to change because of creating new islands. Tons of soils, stones and other materials will go inside the water to create a leveled island. The second negative impact would be narrowing of water passing ways. This may change the entire natural setup in the ocean. On the other hand, this project will also change the movement of water. Narrowing the water passage in ocean would increase the speed of water hitting the Hong Kong’s shores. It will also deplete the oxygen level which will hurt the life inside the sea.

Some financial experts are also unhappy about this project. According to the reports, the manmade islands would cost around $63.8 billion. It is a huge amount that will ultimately increase the cost of plots on these islands.

According to the recent reports by South China Morning Post, there would be a hold up of more than five years and three months to create any buildings in this area of Hong Kong. It may take more than 18 years for any type of construction.

Are you interested to buy an island or house in this area? You are living in the heaven of fools. This project is going to take an unexpectedly longer duration. According to the officials, this project will be completed in 2025. However, the first housing case will finish by the end of 2032. On the other hand, the higher costs of land and construction may take this project till 2045.

No doubt, the facts and figures about this project are not encouraging but this is not the first case of manmade island creation. There are other examples such as King Abdullah City in Saudi Arabia. This city will be developed in the middle of a big desert. This project is expected to cost around $500 billion and authorities will inaugurate it in 2025.
